Want to grow long hair - what to do?

I have short hair (not too short but still short) and I want to let my hair grow (not long hair but rather medium). Should I still get a haircut and tell the barbershop I am trying to grow my hair? Other thing, what should I do in that medium state? Where it isn't long/medium but is not short either? How can I reduce the freeze in my hair?

DO not dye or heat treat your hair and be patient do not cut it and let it grow. No home remedy or gimmick will help. Hair on average grows six inches a year so be patient.
