How would I go about growing long hair?

I've always kept short hair, but the biggest reason for that is because my hair isn't ery straight I've always kinda wanted to try out long hair, though, and if I get into the military this year, I doubt I ever will grow my hair out.

I've always kept my hair short, so I have *no* idea how to take care of longer hair. First off, is there a way to make my hair straighter? I mean, so it doesn't turn into an afro or anything, where it grows downward. Also, do you trim the back of your neck still?

I'm a guy, btw, and I figure I would grow ear-length sideburns and a short goatee. But I wanna keep a good, clean appearance, as most guys with long hair tend to look like bums, lol. Any advice on *that*?

On one final note, just any sort of grooming tips in general. Again, short hair is easy as hell to take care of, so I need all the advice I can get, lol.

go out and buy yourself some good shampoo....talk to someone at a salon about it...also get some conditioner if you don't want it to look messy then take some conditioner and use it like shampoo but only on the ends of your hair(when it starts growing out that is)...there is also some frizzy control stuff you can find in like wallmart or something so that should help a little bit whith the streightness....I have really really really long hair so just make sure you brush your hair and don't just rip through it...thats pretty much it
